EVF 5012
BVM's Super 12s
This high performance Electric VioFan offers an extra power boost, that with proper use, can really enhance the speed and climb performance of your model.
"Proper use" means that the maximum thrust available (16 pounds) is saved for a grass field take-off and a few super vertical and high speed passes during a 5+ minute flight with an Electra Jet. The battery compliment is (2) 5s 5000 25c saddle cells with a 2s 5000 25c pack connected in series.
The motor is the same Neu 1521 as used in the EVF 4010 that always runs cool in an EVF. So if you have a 4010, yes it can be operated as a 5012. Keep the first few flights short to check the power consumption of each pack.
Since there is a measured amount of energy available from the batteries, we find it helpful to set a throttle-to-throttle mix in the transmitter activated with a mix switch. This is a battery saving technique.
The correct numbers for a Spektrum 7: set the throttle ATV at Hi = 85% Low = 70%, then select a mix menu and dial in a thro-thro mix with -38 for the high position and 0 for the low and then activate the mix switch "on".
With the mix switch "on", the in-flight full throttle position will produce about 12# of installed thrust (Electra Jet) moving the switch to the "off" position at full throttle will provide a 2 lb. boost in thrust - almost like having an afterburner.
Because you must move a switch to get this extra power, you will be more aware that the batteries are being taxed a bit extra. Good practice is to start flying your 5012 system very conservatively (4 min) then, after replenishing the batteries, you will get a feel for the ideal combination of power setting and flight profile. Try not to deplete the batteries beyond 80% of their capacity.
The (2) 5s and (1) 2s battery combination has been test flown by some BVM reps and is working well, but with some precautions. The age/condition of the 2s booster pack should be relatively close to that of the (2) 5s packs. If different, avoid draining the system beyond 70% capacity. The "C" ratings of all batteries must be the same.
BVM does have a service to thoroughly test batteries and provide computer generated graph of their condition.
The red line shows a good performing pack while the black line depicts a damaged pack.
So, for ½ lb. of added weight, you get 2 lbs. of extra thrust, not a bad trade-off.
The BVM Sabre, F-80's, T-33's, MIG 15's, F-16's and Maverick's that were flown on BVM .91 D/F systems will now have exceptional performance with the EVF 5012.

Kent Nogy's T-33 is an impressive performer with the EVF 5012 power system. |
Flight tests so far have shown that the (2) 5s and (1) 2s combination usually does not require a change in the E.S.C. timing.
Exceptions
If you order an EVF 5012 as new, the E.S.C. timing is factory set to "low" which works best with (2) 6s 5000 25c Saddle CellsTM.
